Trayvon Martin, Chris Lane, & What Those Reactions Say About Conservatives’ Racial Impotence

Impotence: The condition or state of being incapable of accomplishing or effecting anything.

You knew it was going to happen.

Since the George Zimmerman trial concluded with what many considered a shocking acquittal, the cheer from conservative America was made only sweeter by the outrage from the progressive community over the verdict. On the Internet and cable news there’s been a steady talking point for the Trayvon Martin shooting as being exploited for racial purposes to fit an agenda they believe “the Left” has.

“The Left” in this case including blacks, MSNBC, white people that watch MSNBC, President Obama and virtually anyone who even had a hint of doubt about the jury’s reasoning for their decision.

“A media that arguably fostered the creation of a racial angle in the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman from the minute it became a national story has contorted itself in tortured ways to avoid describing the suspects in Lane’s murder,” wrote conservative columnist Noah Rothman for Mediaite.

“The media is not calling this what this is. These are two black kids, the shooter is black, he killed a white guy, he said he hates white people” on his Twitter account. Bolling said the media doesn’t want to talk about “black on black crime or black on white crime. The only thing that fits the rundown on MSNBC seems to be white on black crime,” said Eric Bolling, conservative commentator for Fox News.

Subconsciously, these reactions say two things about the overwhelming white conservative mind:

1. They’ve been waiting with bated breath for the opportunity when the racial roles were reversed and they could stand in solidarity with their own racial tribe. Or in the case of people like Alan West, with his adopted ideological tribe.

2. They actually do believe that George Zimmerman got away with murder.

There is no other conclusion that can be drawn. Look at the statements.

“the media doesn’t want to talk about “black on black crime or black on white crime. The only thing that fits the rundown on MSNBC seems to be white on black crime.”

Oh, what was that last word? Crime?

I thought George Zimmerman acted in self-defense?

These three boys who murdered Chris Lane were arrested and will be spending years in prison. Nobody questions that they committed a crime.

Nobody is jumping to their defense. The reluctance of “the Left” to be outraged about the story doesn’t come from not wanting to play up the race of the shooters. It comes from there being nothing to be outraged about.

The Trayvon Martin shooting wasn’t an outrage because he was he shot by a white Peruvian guy. It was an outrage because the white Peruvian guy wasn’t arrested right away and because he shot an unarmed man and GOT AWAY WITH IT.

What the right doesn’t understand is that when they point to Chris Lane’s murder as an example of media racial hypocrisy, they’re actually pointing the finger back at themselves for not recognizing they just spent the last year and a half saying their “parallel” case WAS NOT A CRIME.

When Fox News sunk it’s teeth into this story, and the conservative blogosphere joined in – to the point that the question was asked at a White House press briefing – they gave the signal: “Here is our Trayvon Martin, go forth and exploit his death.”

Which is also what they spent the last year and a half saying the Left was doing.

It begs the question why?

Is it because conservatives in the media and elsewhere believe the Left not jumping on the story indicates a bias against white people?

Or is it because conservatives were just so frustrated talking the one subject they have no interest (and no expertise) in – race – that they’d jump on a horrific act of violence that was so blatantly evil just to create a martyr for their ideological (and mostly racial) tribe?

A martyr they can use to say, “see, liberal media, now make a big deal about this!”

Except nobody is taking the George Zimmerman side in this.

Al Sharpton isn’t coming to the defense of the three thugs.

President Obama isn’t going to give a press conference expressing displeasure if the three goons get acquitted.

.

So the only conclusion to be drawn is impotence. Mostly white conservative America has so little to bring to a discussion about racial injustice, they’ll willfully pluck some poor Australian baseball player to be a symbol of reverse racism in the media.

It is shameful. But it is also a fascinating glimpse into the mind of the conservatives, and reveals as much about the state of race relations in this country as the Trayvon Martin verdict.
